Procedures of replacing an electric fuel pump:
1. Disconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
two. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the electric fuel pump. Label the wires to aid in connecting it to the new pump. Reversing polarity on most pumps destroy the unit.
three. Fuel and vapor lines should really be removed from the pump. Label the lines to aid in connecting them to the new pump.
four. PCB slip ring can typically be taken out of the tank by removing the fuel sending unit retaining or lock ring. Even so, it might be required to take away the fuel tank to get at the retaining ring. Removal of the fuel tank can be achieved as described earlier in this chapter.
five. On a fuel pump that is outside the tank, remove the bolts holding it in spot. On in-tank models, loosen the retaining ring. Pull the pump and sending unit out of the tank (if they are combined in one unit) and discard the tank O-ring seal.
six. To eliminate the pump, twist off the filter sock, then push the pump up until the bottom is clear of the bracket. Swing the pump out to the side and pull it down to free it from the rubber fuel line coupler. The rubber sound insulator between the bottom of the pump and bracket and the rubber coupler on the fuel line are generally discarded since new ones are integrated with t he replacement pump. Some pumps have a rubber jacket about them to quiet the pump. If this is the case, slip off the jacket and put it on the new pump.
7. Compare the replacement pump with the old a single. If essential, transfer any fuel line fittings from the old pump to the new one particular. Note the position of the filter sock on the pump so you can set up a new 1 in the exact same relative position.
8. When inserting the new pump back into the sending unit bracket, be careful not to bend the bracket. Make certain the rubber sound insulator under the bottom of the pump is in spot. Install a new filter sock on the pump inlet and reconnect the pump wires. Be completely particular you have right polarity. Replace the O-ring seal on the fuel tank opening, then put the pump and sender assembly back in the tank and tighten the locking ring by rotating it clockwise. Some pump/sender assembly units are secured by bolts.
9. If the fuel was removed from the automobile, replace it.
10. Reconnect electrical slip rings . Reconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
12. Get started the engine and check all connections for fuel leaks.
Warning: Steer clear of the temptation to test the new pump ahead of reinstalling the fuel tank, by energizing it with a couple of jumper wires. Running slip ring can damage it for the reason that the pump relies on fuel for lubrication and cooling.
